What socket for rear seal retainer on a BB??

I cant seem to get a socket to fit into the hole to get the 2 recessed bolts out of the rear seal retainer!I know it's a 12 point and was told it was 7/16,but the 3/8 drive one that I bought today wont even fit in the hole.Anyone got a line on this,I am trying to get it apart so I can get it to the shop and this is all thats holding me up. Thanx
