I've rebuilt a few 4-speeds, but I've never had to change just the tailhousing before. Is this possible to do without disassembling the whole transmission, and what is involved? Thanks.

well , not very easily i would assume , the mainshaft is not held into the maincase , its retained in the tail housing .
you don't really mneed to full disassemble , just pull the side cover and forks and pull the tail housing , swap tailhousings and reassemble .

you aren't trying to do this in the car ? it could probably be done ...

Different 4 speeds require different methods of removal. Pull the side cover, the 6 tailhousing bolts, and put it in reverse. Some require that you slip the 3-4 slider forward to clear 3rd gear as you lift it out. Transmissions with the 307 rear bearing are sometimes a royal pain in the ass to get the snap ring collapsed, and moved out of the way on. But the 308 units are usually a snap to deal with. You expand the snap ring, and pull the shaft and bearing out leaving the snap ring in the case. Dennis
