I need to get a new speaker for my 1970 Duster. Can anyone tell me where to get one?? What makes it tough is that there is one tab on each end to bolt up to; it isn't the normal 4 bolt speaker.
Can anyone help me??
Thank you!
Chris

what i have seen done quite frequently is people buy a new 4x10 and cut out the cone out of the old speaker, set the new one inside and sandwich it. I just bought a 4X10 that had the two on the end and made some small brackets.

You're right , COLORME . It was back in the early eighties that I needed a speaker for my 70 Duster , and only went to Radio Shack to get one I could modify to fit . Turned out they had the one I needed . I was impressed ; tickled pink , even .

I was thinking of replacing mine, the one idea i was pondering was buying a standard 6x9 speaker and see if there was some way to strap it in there.
Has anybody been successful at this B4? Then you could at least have front/rear stereo sound that's respectable compared to the little one (spkr) that the factory stuffs in there.

Kinda like a metal plate adapter type idea is what I thought might work. Screw metal plate to the two screw holes, then have screw holes for the 4 hole 6x9.

I just went through this on my 1972 Dart.
Radio Shack does carry the 4" x 10" speakers, and the mounting hole pattern and 8-ohm impedance is an exact replacement. They are about $15. This is the route I would choose before buying a 30-year-old one that's probably dry-rotted for the same (or more) money.
However, here's the option I took:
Get a 4-1/4" x 9-5/8" piece of 1/8" Thick Aluminum Plate. Drill and tap (x4) holes to attach it to the underside of the speaker mounting bracket. Use the holes in the bracket that were previously used by the speaker itself, approx 6-7/8" x 3-1/4" pattern. Now drill and tap (x8) holes to mount (x2) 4" speakers to the underside of the aluminum plate. Lastly, drill (x2) 3-5/8" diameter holes for the new speaker cones themselves. I also bought a piece of black speaker cloth to cover everything up and hide this "non-factory" modification.

The benefit to all that was the ability to maintain a Left and a Right speaker output from the radio without leaving one or the other unconnected (and risk blowing out the main amplifier output).

What is the size of the large middle speaker in an E-Body dash? Is there a good source for them somewhere?

I Think Trucks with Premium Sound with rear speakers used 4x10s too, might look there, too, though I dont know how good they would be versus an original.

69 thumb wheel radio...mounting question?

Hi guys,
I recieved my gauge cluster back from being reconditioned, and am very happy with the results.
My dash cluster radio face plate is set up for thumb dails. I did a trail fit of the cluster in my dash frame and found that the existing radio metal backing plate is for a knob radio.
Since I have never seen how a thumb radio is mounted, should I grind the welds on the knob radio backer plate and remove it.......
or cut the square holes in it for the thumb radio.
Any tips on how to install a thumb radio would be very helpful, is there a backer plate for thumb wheel radio?
Thanks
Mike

Here is a pic of a 1970 rallye dash radio. The chrome bezel in the front should bolt up to the metal dash frame itself and the tab on the bottom/back of the radio bolts up to the bottom of the dash and props it up. Don't know if I helped you any, but it was a good excuse to play with my new camera

That little red X is such a tease
Any pictures of a thumb wheel radio and the metal backing plate at the dash frame would be great. I am searching for a thumb wheel radio for the car, but I would like to finshing the painting on the dash and install the new cluster. I can install the radio at anytime when I find one.
Thanks for the help guys!

I do not understand your dilemma. Whatever you do, do not hack up your instrument cluster. You should not have any trouble getting a plate for your thumbwheel radio. Check on the buy/sell page and advertise for one. I do not understand how you can have a radio faceplate for a button radio. All 68-69 Darts had thumbwheel radios. What am I missing?

69,
Could you post a picture? I have the entire dasy out of my 69 Dart and could take some pictures for you. I am just not sure if the Cuda has the same radio.

67 Cudas came with a round knob radio and a rallye type dash bezel which the darts never had until 1970. I don't think he has a dart anyways (?) I'm guessing that the chrome plated metal bezel that goes on the front of the radios are different for a thumb and a round and thats all it is....

Yes, you are right. I was trying to think of how he could have a round knob radio piece in the mix when all the cudas had a rallye setup with a thumbwheel except 67. I too am confused at this point..LOL

Outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!
Great pic's you guys, that's the correct radio I'll will be using for my car. My ralley cluster has the correct face plate for the radio shown in your pictures.
Now lets talk about the "metal dash frame" that holds the cluster and radio. I believe mine is incorrect for the thumb wheel radio.
I will take some pic's tomorrow and post them so you can point me in the right direction. Pic's of the dash will make it easier for you to tell me whats wrong.

I would have answered your replies sooner, but I had to reinstall my ISP.

Thanks again guys.

My Dodge still has the AM thumbwheel radio which I am not about to take out, and a friend of mine gave me a FM converter, thanks Tim, but the wife is wanting a CD player for the summer cruising. Where is a good hiding spot?

I think the point of hiding it is to keep the car looking original. The glove box is a decent place to put it if you don't want it to show.

Barry, you can get a remote CD player that holds like 5 CD's and put it in the trunk. Thats what I'm doing with my wifes Dart conv.
