Moparts Tech ArchiveWheelsSpare Tires and ???'sE-Body spacesaver spare quest?
I was lookin around at some spare tires to see if i could find one at a reasonable pricefor my 71 challenger, and i saw one on (yalls favorite!)ebay, except it was an orange color? and it appears to look like it was originally done like this? What color is itsupposed to be? I know someone knows somethin about these things! Thanks Clay. I believe Chrysler was black. I know that AMC used an orange one with the same bolt pattern. what kinda numbers or markings are there to tell the difference? just the color change?.... Got several. It may only be color and tire company. I believe AMC was BFG and Chrysler was Good Year. Will check after work for you. My 70 Challenger still has the original space saver in it and it has a black rim with a BF Goodrich tire. Hey reflections, im actually off today, NO WORKOUTS! so i could come check out that car anytime today, whenever is best for u! Just let me know.... RT/Jack- Thats what i thought, i have heard of both bfg's and goodyr, and i though they were supposed to be black. i just saw this one on ebay, that looked like an original nice shape wheel that was painted orange, and the guy said it was for E-Bodies? Thats why i was confused....Thanks for the info! What is the fair market value of this setup? I read in one of the mopar mag's about Spares and their was a one owner 71 Cuda w/Factory orange space sav'r used as an example. If I am remembering correctly the writer had seen in the past Orange rims in '71 vintage Plymouths but never in a dodge. And said that most were black. Cuda / Duster Joe See pic of spacesaver on board. There are your wheel markings. My AMC wheels, of course, are missing the Pentastar. The original one in my 71 Chall. is black w/ Good Year. Chrysler probably just bought whatever was cheapest at the time. The one your referring to does not even have the right size tire. 70 and 71 space savers had the B.F.Goodrich F 78x14 tire. The rims were made by Kelsey and they have very distinctive markings. Can a spacesaver tire be mounted on another rim or did they have special rims. I have a pentastar on mine somehow. As long as the rim is a 14 x 5.5. It will work fine. R&R is right the tire should be a BFG and can be an E or F series in 14", rim is always black and for e-body in those years has the extra hole, if the paint is faded you will not have the white spot or sticker after so long a time, the orange one on ebay right now is AMC and late 70's besides being a D series (much smaller)at first I thought it maybe late aspen/volare (??) but I did see 2 or 3 more on there just now that look correct. I have heard in some 71 and later years a goodyear tire was used I know this is the case in later 70 chrysler cars.. I dont own one myself anymore, but my neighbor has one in both his cuda's and they both are the same as above, but 1 has stamped part numbers.. There are at least SIX different versions of spares used on Ebodies, depending on year of car & if was an early/late year build daate. Govier did an article on SPARES in dec/jan 94 issue of MoparMuscle mag. Can't remember all the cars I seen with wrong spares & bottles. Enought already!. If you just want a quasi correct spare get any black rim BFG, most people (judges included) probably won't know the difference unless there on this site. P.S. Watch out for those AMC tires & the late 60's/early 70's firebird tires, Have BFG info provided by members listed above Spare tire size? A body 340SIX what is the correct size tire for the well in the trunk?I see cars with the space tire making the trunk mat realy poke up.So i would like to do it right.Rim i have is 14x5.5" car is 73 dart sport but should be the same well as any dart/duster.{ i do know that the 6" wide rim is not the right size and will also make this happen}please give metric size like 195/70/14 etc..........thanks =========================================== Dart270
========================================= 69Dartman To get mine to sit in there right when I had one I think it just about needed a 13 incher. ========================================== Cincylance I just bought a 14 x 4.5" steel rim for a spare. This is a good question you have. I plan on using a 185/70/14 if I can find that size. =========================================== OzHemi What about going to the BFG, Cooper (etc) web site and just looking for a 14" tire with a overall width that will sit down in the well properly..this might get you close at least to something to work (you can look for overall diameter too, makes sure it fits down in there) ========================================== Dart270 You could use 165/82-14 on a 4,5" rim. ============================================ goldduster318 My car has a 185 75D14 for a spare right now. that's about 26" tall. ============================================ carl The 340 and hp type cars came with a E-70-14 tire and the plain jane models came with an E-78-14 tire. Also 'if' I remember correctly you could order the same rim to match those on the car for your spare. But if you didn't order it that way it came with an plain jane rim as the spare. I know I ordered the spare tire for my rr to match the rims and tires on the car. ============================================ MY340 Kevin, I'm at work which is out of town. Sorry buddy. Are you wanting to go with an original look tire because the E70-14 polyglas does fit as it was used as the stock tire size and spare on many Duster/Dart Sport 340's. It would look cool to have one in the tire well but they cost around $120-$130 each. The P205/70R14 is about the equivalent but I would go one size smaller to be sure. The 205/70 may be alittle wider than a E70. Just saw Carl's post and I believe the 195 is a little shorter than a E tire but that would be my choice. A tire shop would probably let you take some junkers home to try the fit for the spare well. ========================================= Dart270 I all list i have seen are: ========================================== Brian kevin, I have the original E70-14 Raised White Letter spare mounted on the original black 14x5.5" steel wheel in my spare tire well. As your picture shows, it DOES stick way up into the trunk! The modern radial equivilant to an E70-14 is 205-70-14 as stated by Dart270. The E70-14 is just a hair taller than a 205-70-14 and puts about an inch more tread on the road (E70-14 wider than 205-70-14)! Here are good tire combinations for a stock wheeled Duster/Demon/Dart Sport: 205-70-14's all around The 245-60-14's are a hair shorter than the 205-60-14's but close enough if you want more rubber on the road. You can run these tires (205-70-14's/245-60-14's) on stock 14x5.5" wheels with the following air pressure: 205-70-14's 32Psi If you need pictures on the stock spare (E70-14) mounted on the stock wheel in or out of the spare tire well, drop me an email. If you are looking for a good sticky 205-70-14, checkout www.tirerack.com. The Sumitomo HTR200 goes for $40 each. It's a "Summer" H speed rated tire that is sticky and has a fairly soft sidewall Read the reviews). If I had the extra cash, I'd purchase four or them right now. =========================================== autoxcuda I like to run the modern temporary spares in the trunk. They allow for more room and weigh less. I bought one from a Ford in the junkyard and opened up the center register carefully with a die grinder. Weight is horsepower. Steve Wall =========================================== 340SIX The idea was to get a spare that fit the trunk well corectly and did not poke up a ton!Thasnks top all that replyed!! They mounted me a 185/70/14 and it left way to much room in the well So i did not even try the 195 the 205/70/14 fit just right withy a little room to spare.Note the tires i have on the car are 215/60/15 front on 15x6.6 ralleys and 275/60/15 BFG drags radials rear on 15x8 all rims ahve 4.5"back space stock wheel well openings but the rear has a 1970 8 3/4" rear with moser axles{green bearings} with 11x2.5" drum brakes you can fit your finger between the spring and the tire this to me ios the most tire that can be put on this car with the whells and back space i have thanks again kevin ========================================== RWL Goodyear Polyglas - date code? JimRT I have an original RWL 'Polglas F70-14' I've used for a '70 E-body spare since the mid 1980s. It has a code 'MELD Y4A493' on the backside. Does this code say anything about the date of manufacture, or anything else? If not, is it elsewhere on the tire? Thanks! =================================== Y4A493 ======================================= Mark I can remember buying them in 1982 for my first car. =================================== They still made them put they went to bigger out lined letters instead of the small solid letters. =================================== JimRT It doesn't have the 'outlined' letters, they are solid, and it looks like the 'correct' style lettering that you see on E-bodies in magazines, etc. Can I assume that 1973 is correct? ====================================== Like GTXtasy said, as long as they are the last 3 numbers in the DOT line. Look for DOT on the sidewall then look at last 3 numbers, which usually look a little different from the rest with the impression of phillip's head screws on either end. These are changed weekly and is the date code. Newer tires have gone to 4 digit numbers, like 1002= tenth week of 2002. =====================================
